Exploratory

The Exploratory Living & Learning Community (LLC) helps students who are exploring majors and career options learn more about themselves and make sound decisions about their academic plan.

Based on a 2022 survey from UT’s College of Arts and Sciences, 75.3% of our incoming freshmen reported that they didn’t know exactly what academic major to choose. The Exploratory LLC provides support and encouragement to exploratory students as they begin to identify major and career paths.

This LLC is designed for first-year students who are unsure of their major, considering multiple majors, not admitted to a competitive major of choice, or those who have a professional school or career in mind but have not yet decided on an undergraduate major.

As a member of this LLC, students will have the opportunity to connect with University Exploratory advisors, faculty from across disciplines, and various alumni and professionals. Students will learn about university resources and have access to programs, activities, and specific support initiatives designed to assist them in becoming academically, professionally and career ready. Students will benefit from group study and will enjoy social events with other exploratory students.

The Exploratory LLC will be located in Magnolia Hall for 2023-2024.  All LLC locations are subject to change.

Community Requirements

The Exploratory LLC is open to any first-year student coming in with majors listed as University Exploratory or Arts & Sciences Exploratory concentration. The activities and events scheduled for the LLC participants will be focused on this theme.

Students will take a special topic First-Year Studies 101 – Exploratory course with their community members. The course will be for credit and will include taking assessments with the Center for Career Development.

Students will participate in major exploration events, career workshops, trips to local employers, and informal meetings with professionals from a variety of career fields. These activities provide opportunities to gain exposure to many types of majors and careers, as well as to develop skills and knowledge for personal and professional growth.
