Room Selection for Transfer Students

[box color=”green”]

“Living on campus has allowed for a much easier transition into life at UT. It has made it easier to make friends and pushed me to be more involved on campus because I’m constantly surrounded by all of the wonderful opportunities we have here.”

-Shelby Furer, Political Science Major, transfer student from Ohio

University Housing is excited to welcome you to the University of Tennessee!  Living on campus is an important component to your UT experience, and we are happy you are interested in joining the Volunteer community!

To ensure the quality of the UT experience, transfer students are highly encouraged to live on campus.

Please review our step-by-step instructions below to participate in the 2016-2017 Room Selection for Transfer Students:

Shortly after confirming your enrollment, University Housing will send an email notification indicating that your contract has been activated.  Please follow the instructions below to complete your contract:

  1. Log into My UT Housing using your NetID and password.
  2. If you have forgotten your password, click here and follow the instructions provided.  Once you re-set your password, return to step one.
  3. Follow the prompts to confirm student information, and to select and confirm roommate and suitemate request(s).
  4. You are preparing to enter into a legally binding contract for University Housing for the Fall 2016-Spring 2017 academic year. Click the “I Agree” button to accept the University Housing Terms & Conditions of the housing contract.

Once you submit the housing contract, you will be eligible to participate in the Room Selection process. University Housing will contact you via Volmail with instructions to participate.

University Housing deadlines and processes are different for each term.  Select your entry term below to learn more about the room assignment process.

Deadlines:

  • Fall entry transfer students who complete a housing contract prior to February 10 may participate in Room Selection on February 12-15.
  • Fall entry transfer students who complete a housing contract after February 10 may participate in Room Selection in June.  Additional information for Transfer Student Room Selection in June will be sent to Volmail accounts during the spring semester.

You may request any available room at any time during February 12-15.  Students who do not select a room during their Room Selection date range will be automatically assigned by University Housing.

Room Selection will be open 24 hours per day during Transfer Room Selection, and University Housing staff is available from 8am – 5pm Monday-Friday to assist students with questions.

Please follow the instructions below to select your room:

  1. Log into My UT Housing using your NetID and password.
  2. If you have forgotten your password, click here and follow the instructions provided.  Once you re-set your password, return to step one.
  3. Click on “Room Selection for Incoming Students” link.
  4. Review your roommate choices and select roommate and suitemate request(s).
  5. Select an available room.  Available rooms are determined by certain criteria, including the number of requested roommates, gender, and spaces held for various university academic programs.

University Housing contracts for transfer students enrolling for the spring semester are sent to Volmail accounts late in the fall semester.  Shortly after completing your contract, University Housing will assign you to an available space in a residence hall.  Space will continue to be assigned through the first week of spring classes.

Transfer students interested in living on campus for mini-term or summer courses can access the University Housing contract through My UT Housing beginning in early spring.  Shortly after completing your contract, University Housing will assign you to an available space in a summer school residence hall.  Space will continue to be assigned throughout the summer.

How do I know if I get to select my own room, or if University Housing will send me an assignment?
Fall Entry transfer students are able to select their own room.  Students who complete their Housing contract by February 10 may select their room during February 12-15.  Fall entry transfer students who fill out a contract after February 10 may select their room during the summer months.  Additional information will be sent to students in April.

Spring & Summer entry transfer students are assigned by University Housing.  Shortly after completing the Housing contract, you will see your room assignment appear in My UT Housing.

Are single rooms available?
Single rooms, or buyouts, are very limited and are available on a case-by-case basis.  Please contact University Housing for additional information.

How do I request a roommate?
Prior to selecting a room or receiving an assignment from University Housing, transfer students and their preferred roommates (students currently enrolled at UT) may enter a mutual roommate request.  Both students must confirm each other, and roommates/suitemates may be added at any time prior to selecting a room or receiving your assignment.

May I invite a friend from off-campus as a roommate or suitemate?
Yes, as long as they are a current UT student.  However, they must also request you as a roommate.  Roommate choices must be confirmed prior to selecting a room.

Can I cancel my contract for next year if I sign up now?
No.  This contract may not be canceled unless you are no longer attending the University of Tennessee.

Do I have to pay a housing deposit when I select a room?
No.  Your deposit is included in your student fees.

If I can’t get the room that I want, can I get on a waiting list?
Yes.  Students may sign up for the waiting list without signing a contract with University Housing.
