Room selection allows incoming first-year students to select their own room, providing an opportunity to choose their campus experience.
Step #1 – Register for Room Selection
Shortly after confirming your enrollment, University Housing will send an e-mail notification indicating that your contract has been activated. You will receive instructions on how to identify housing preferences and make roommate and suitemate requests.
Step #2 – Select your room
Beginning March 2016, University Housing will send your room selection dates. You may request any available room at any time during these dates. Students who do not select a room during this time will be automatically assigned by University Housing.
To request a specific roommate or suitemates, each applicant must request each other by listing the requested student’s name on the roommate request screen of the housing contract. The roommate’s name should be listed in the first set of boxes and suitemates’ name second and third. You will then be able to pull in your requested roommates during the Room Selection process.

If you do not have a specific request for a roommate, you may select any available space during Room Selection.
If, after you arrive on campus and check into your assigned room, you want to move to another room or hall, see your hall director.
If you require special accommodations please contact University Housing as soon as possible. We request that you submit your requirements in writing so that we can make every effort to accommodate your needs. You will also need to contact the Office of Disability Services at 865-974-6087.
Single rooms are very limited on campus and are located in Hess Hall. If we have been able to accommodate everyone that requires housing, and there are vacancies, you may apply to keep your room as a single room or move to a completely vacant room by contacting your hall director. There is an additional charge to rent a double room as a single. If a single room becomes available, you will be notified through your mailbox.
What’s in my room?
In Hess and Massey, you share a community bathroom with the other residents on your floor. The showers are divided into individual showers, and have shower curtains for privacy, in the community bathrooms.
In Clement, Humes, Morrill, North Carrick, Reese, and South Carrick, the rooms are set up as suites. You share a bathroom with your roommate and two suitemates.
In Laurel Hall and Volunteer Hall, you share the bathroom with the other students that live in your apartment.
Each residence hall has a laundry facility with washers and dryers. The cost of laundry is included in student rent, and there is no additional fee for use of the machine.
Yes! The cost of cable television is built into the room rate.
University Housing provides a Microfridge in all residence hall rooms except in apartment-style halls. It is a combined microwave, refrigerator, and freezer.
Students are not permitted to bring their own refrigerator because the microfridge appliance is already in the room. Residents in the apartment-style halls may bring a microwave and it should not exceed 600 watts.
Each residence hall has a post office in the lobby of the building for students to receive their mail. Students are given their post office box combinations at check-in. Each resident’s post office box number corresponds with their room number.

You may ship packages prior to the move-in day. However, it is best to wait until you have received your room assignment as your room number will be your post office box number and should be included on your package. Please indicate on the package that it should be held for your arrival. Since secured storage space is limited, we request that you wait as late as possible to ship your items. All packages must be prepaid and the university cannot assume responsibility for items shipped.
Furnishings vary slightly for each hall. However, most rooms will have a long twin size bed, desk and chair, a chest of drawers, and closet for each person. Suite-style rooms will also have a medicine cabinet for each person and a sink in the room. All rooms are equipped with a smoke detector. Orange Hall apartments, Volunteer Hall, and Laurel Hall are also furnished with a sofa, chair, and dining table and chairs. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, range, and trash disposal. Volunteer Hall has washer/dryers and dish washers.
All residence hall rooms are wired for computers and wireless service is available and there is no charge for service. Your computer must have an ethernet card in order to access the university system and you will need to contact the Telecommunications and Network Services Office at 865-974-9919 to sign-up for service.
Students are not allowed to have an open flame (Bunsen burners, lighted candles, etc.) or open coil appliances (space heaters, toasters, etc.) in their rooms. Other items that are not allowed in student rooms are halogen lamps, incense, electric blankets, and George Foreman Grills.
An extension cord must be UL approved, 16-gauge and not exceed an unspliced length of six feet with a polarized plug and a single outlet. Power strips and multi-plugs with surge protectors are allowed in rooms. Extension cords can not be placed under carpeting or where they will be walked on – such as across the doorway.
For health reasons, pets are not allowed in the halls or on the premises. The only exception is fish and guide dogs accompanying sight impaired persons. Please contact the Office of Disability Services at 865-974-6087 for additional information on assistance animals.
The University of Tennessee is a dry campus. In accordance with university regulations, serving, consuming, possession, being under influence or the display of an alcoholic beverage is not permitted.
Residents may have overnight guests of the same sex only. As a courtesy you will need to make prior arrangements with your roommate(s). The maximum length of any visit is three days and three nights.
The university offers two housing options for students. This allows students to select the type of facility in which he or she will live, within the university’s capability to offer such living arrangements. Students are encouraged to give considerable thought and attention to their housing selection. The differentiated housing program offers three distinct types of living atmospheres.
Group C: Residence hall units with programming, regulations, and supervision; minimally supervised open houses restricted to a maximum of seven per week of no more than fourteen hours duration each; staff responsibility focuses on assisting residents with problems and orientation to university living. Visitation hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., and beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday visitation runs continuously until 1:00 a.m. Sunday night/Monday morning. All guests must be escorted at all times.
Group E: Apartments with minimal regulations, and supervision; and twenty-four hours visitation. (Not available to freshmen, ie: fewer than two (2) terms in residence or 30 credit hours.) All guests must be escorted at all times.
Televisions are not to be mounted to walls, closets, etc. in student rooms.
Each residence hall has its own maintenance and housekeeping staff. In order to make a maintenance request, students should visit the Housing homepage, select the “Maintenance Request” link, and carefully follow all instructions to submit a maintenance request.
You should bring toiletries, sheets (please check for building sheet size—most halls have extra-long beds), blankets, pillow(s), towels, alarm clock, laundry detergent, laundry basket, digital telephone (if you plan to apply for phone service) and all school supplies.
Residents may bring their cars to the campus. The office of Parking Services operates the parking on campus. Students are allowed to purchase a non-commuter hang tag (know as “N” lot hang tags) at the beginning of the school year. There are a limited number of parking spaces on the campus and it is possible that not all requests may be filled. Questions should be directed to the Parking Services office at 865-974-6031.
The residence halls close at the end of fall semester (December) and reopen at the beginning of spring semester (January) and also for a week for spring break in March. The only residence halls that remain open during this time are Volunteer Hall, Clement Hall, and Laurel Hall. All halls remain open for all other holidays or closings.
Bicycles are permitted on campus and racks are provided for bikes in the front of each hall. Bicycles may also be stored in your room if you wish. However, bicycles may not be stored in common areas such as hallways or stairwells.
Learning to live in close quarters and with a person you do not know very well will sometimes present a challenge. Keep the lines of communication open. Discuss potential areas of conflict and be open to compromise. If you find that you and your roommate could use some help in getting a discussion of issues started, your RA can help. If you need further assistance with a roommate situation please contact your Hall Director. Every effort will be made to help you and your roommate achieve a solution that will be beneficial to everyone concerned.
Although the number of students living on campus varies from time to time, currently approximately 7,100 students are living in residence halls.
