Named after James P. Hess, a long time UT business manager and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, this residence hall began as an annex to Melrose Hall. Currently housing 1,036 residents, Hess Hall features comfortable double-occupancy rooms and large community bathrooms on each floor.

A welcoming courtyard leading to the main lobby provides space for students to hang out, study, and host events. Residents in Hess Hall enjoy the ability to flexibly arrange furniture within their rooms, a student-centered floor plan that encourages genuine interaction with floor-mates, and convenient dining options located downstairs adjacent to a spacious and friendly lobby area. Hess Hall is located near Hodges Library and the Humanities and Social Sciences building, making studying and going to class easy!

The Hess Grocery is a food service facility that offers a variety of food items, and is located in the building. The Hodges Library, International House, and the Frieson Black Cultural Center are conveniently located within a block of Hess Hall.
